Ten personal actions to prepare for just in case if you get an omicron infection
- Have the phone numbers of your primary care physician/clinic and your own emergency contacts handy. Also find out who or where will provide care/medical advice during the off-hours, weekends, and holidays. Know your options. Virtual visits can be available (e.g., Carbon Health) but you need to check out with your insurance about coverage first.
- Look up if there are any test-to-treat programs close by you to get the oral antivirals (Paxlovid or Molnupiravir) if you are eligible (symptoms within 5 days and at risk for serious disease). Find out if your insurance will pay for these programs. Click here to access the Test to Treat Locator in English, simplified Chinese, or Spanish, or call 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489) to get help in English, Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, and over 150 languages – 8:00 am to midnight ET, 7 days a week. For San Franciscans, the test to treat programs are in some CVS and Walgreen drug stores and the Locator above will give you the exact addresses. For Kaiser patients or those using Northeast Medical Services in San Francisco or Asian Health Services in Oakland, these providers may have a supply of Paxlovid or Molnupiravir in their pharmacies. But you should check it out beforehand.
- Make sure yours and all family members’ CoVID vaccinations are up to date.
- You should have a thermometer and pulse oximeter available at home.
- Have available at home over-the-counter medications for treating the most common symptoms - cough, nasal congestion, headaches and fevers – a pharmacist at your local drug store can give you recommendations if you don’t know what drugs to get.
- Sanitizers such as Clorox wipes.
- N-95 or equivalent facial masks.
- Rapid antigen tests – Test yourself when symptoms subside to make sure you get a negative test.
- Have a portable air purifier with HEPA filter that you can use in the isolation room.
- Have at least a five-day food and beverage supply at home.
